Each great sportsman has his trademark, and anybody who ever had the pleasure to see Jörgen Persson at his best will never forget his backhand.
A backhand stroke like a whip, a ball control that made his blocks look natural, a mighty forehand topspin with a flight path difficult to predict and nerves of steel.
However, Jörgen Persson always seemed to be boyish, rather shy than hard-bitten.
Experts attested early on that Jörgen Persson was of great talent but would lack any killer instinct – they said he was too nice and decent.
He proved them all wrong: European Champion 1986, World Championship Runner-Up 1989, World Champion and World Cup Winner 1991, four times World Team Champion and six times European Team Champion with Sweden.
"To me DONIC means know-how, experience, progress."
Well, Jörgen Persson is a very nice chap indeed, but not too nice. As an actor he’d prefer playing the hero rather than the villain, he admits. But too nice?
As if! His opponents often praised his fairness, but he acted very clever from early on. Jörgen Persson knows how to win.
His last highlight on the international stage was at the Olympic Games 2008 in Beijing, where he once again proved his enormous discipline and willpower, his knowledge of tactics and his experience, reaching the semi-final as a 42-year-old.
The Swedish Table Tennis Association can count itself lucky to have engaged Jörgen Persson as the headcoach of the men’s team.
We from DONIC are proud to have accompanied him since the very beginning of his career. Jörgen is a perfectionist, working meticulously and repeatedly giving us important input on our product development. His reliability, his know-how, his feel for the ball and his sharp eye are part of DONIC for more than 30 years. Together with Jan-Ove Waldner Jörgen Persson is one of the few personalities who deserve to be called a living legend.
