His best stroke? That’s an easy question for Fanbo Meng: "Backhand bomb" the 20-year-old answers and grins.
As a matter of fact, most opponents prefer to aim the ball at his forehand, knowing well that his flawless backhand block makes it almost impossible for them to break through on this side.
Nevertheless, there’s still a lot to learn for Fanbo Meng. Born in Germany as the son of a professional table tennis player from China, little Fanbo’s way seemed predestined, but this doesn’t mean he didn’t have to work hard.
He is 1,94 m, rather too tall for a table tennis player, and he was already tall as a boy, so he had to work on his flexibility from the very beginning.
He can play powerful topspins from backhand and forehand, but to do so he first has to move his body to the right position. Fanbo Meng often prepares his hard strokes by playing topspins with a lot of rotation – his forehand sidespin, a typical weapon of many left-handers, makes many opponents feel uncomfortable.
"I’m even more successful with my new rubber: Bluegrip C2"
His equipment supports his style: Fanbo plays with DONIC Bluestorm PRO on backhand and DONIC Bluegrip C2 forehand, which allow him to play topspins with a lot of rotation.
Fanbo Meng’s first season in the German Bundesliga was a year of apprenticeship. By now he is on his way to establish himself in the TTBL. Wins against Mattias Falck, World Championship Runner-Up, Steffen Mengel, former German Champion, and Kanak Jha, number 1 of the USA, prove that Fanbo has international prospects, too.
He might not be the type of highly gifted talent who will storm to the tops immediately, but he is tenacious and insistent, hard working and diligent, disciplined and very ambitious.
